Improving your Photography is taught by Mary Aten who is a Muskegon resident and has a teaching degree as well as a photo editing certificate/associates degree. Mary can be found on most Saturdays selling her work in the Muskegon Farmer’s Market.  She has held several exhibitions and has been selected as the National Park System’s Artist in Residence for September 2016 at Big Horn Canyon National Recreation Area.  You can see more of Mary’s work at www.atenphoto.com.

Students can take one or all classes in the 5 class series:

  • Class is designed for students with a Digital SLR camera or who are considering buying a DSLR (camera with interchangeable lens)
  • Classes will include PowerPoint presentations of concepts, demonstrations, and time for discussion/Q&A.
  • Price for the 5 class series is $125, price for an individual class is $37

Class dates

  • 1st session – 6/8, 6/15, 6/16, 6/22, 6/29 for classes 1-5 – Time 6:00-8:00 pm
  • 2nd session – 7/13, 7/20, 7/22, 7/27, 8/3 for classes 1-5 – Time 6:00-8:00 pm
  • 3rd session – 8/10, 8/17, 8/18, 8/24, 8/31 for classes 1-5 – Time 6:00-8:00 pm
  1. Class 1 – Basics Plus (equipment and composition – Handout provided)
    1. Operating your Equipment (Camera/Lens/Settings – General Tips and Best Practices
    2. Fundamentals of Composition – Discussion and Examples
  2. Class 2 Making your images pop – More on composition and dynamic photos
    1. Use of light, shadow and contrast in composition – Examples and why they work
    2. Use of Colors in Composition – Examples and why they work
  3. Class 3Lighthouses, waves and sunsets – Photo Walk Class
    1. Students will meet at Muskegon State Park with their cameras for discussion/demonstration on ways to improve photo composition and technique for wave and sunset photos
    2. Students will practice techniques and take their own pictures
  4. Class 4Editing Programs  – (Demonstrations)
    1. Editing software – What it can do for you (free and professional software)
    2. Demonstration on how to improve photos with software and where to find it
  5. Class 5Beyond the Basics
    1. Panorama and HDR (High Dynamic Range) – discussion/demonstration
    2. Printing and Exporting / More learning Resources
